๐ผ Tower · House edge ~1%Tower Game Odds, House Edge, and Why Climbing Higher Never Changes the Math
Tower looks like a skill game โ pick the safe tile, climb one more row, watch the payout grow. It isn't. It's a chain of independent coin flips with a ~1% house edge baked into every rung. EV Lab lets you play Tower free, with no signup and no real money, and shows that edge live so you can watch it work instead of taking our word for it.

- 1Place a bet, then climb the tower one row at a time.
- 2In each row, pick a safe tile while avoiding the hidden trap tile(s) โ clear it and you advance.
- 3Every cleared row multiplies your potential payout higher.
- 4One wrong pick ends the run and you lose the entire bet โ there's no partial loss.
- 5Cash out at any time to lock in your current multiplier, or keep climbing for more.
- 6Pick a difficulty: more trap tiles per row means a lower survival chance but a bigger jump in payout โ that's variance, not better odds.
The house edge & the math
Tower's house edge is about 1%, which means the game returns roughly 99 cents of expected value for every dollar wagered โ your long-run expected value is negative by design. Here's the mechanism: in each row your chance of picking a safe tile is (safe tiles รท total tiles), and the multiplier the game offers for clearing that row is set just below the "fair" multiplier. A fair payout would be 1 รท (survival probability); Tower pays about 0.99 รท (survival probability). Because each row is an independent event, the multipliers compound โ and so does the 1% shave. Clear five rows and your survival odds are the product of five per-row probabilities, while the payout is the product of five already-shaved multipliers. The edge doesn't grow as you climb, but it never disappears either: it's applied to every single rung, every time.
Worked example. Say a row has 3 safe tiles and 1 trap (4 total), so your survival probability is 3/4 = 0.75. A fair multiplier would be 1 รท 0.75 = 1.333x. Tower instead pays about 0.99 รท 0.75 = 1.32x. Clear two such rows and your odds of surviving are 0.75 ร 0.75 = 0.5625, while your payout is 1.32 ร 1.32 โ 1.74x. Expected value on a $1 bet after two rows: 0.5625 ร $1.74 โ $0.98 โ about 2 cents lost, the 1% edge applied to each of the two rungs.
Does any strategy help?
No. There is no Tower strategy, difficulty setting, or cash-out rule that flips the expected value positive โ the ~1% edge is identical whether you cash out after one row or chase the top, whether you play "easy" or "hard." What your choices actually control is variance, not edge. A high-trap difficulty gives you rare, large wins and many quick losses; cashing out early gives you frequent small wins and lower swings. Both have the same negative EV; you're just choosing the shape of the ride. The popular instinct to "lock in profit by cashing out early" feels smart but changes nothing about the math โ it only narrows your distribution of outcomes. The one honest edge a player has is the cash-out button as a discipline tool, and the fact that here it costs you nothing real to learn that.
FAQ
- What are the odds in the Tower game?
- Your per-row odds equal safe tiles divided by total tiles โ for example 3 safe out of 4 tiles is a 75% survival chance for that row. Across multiple rows the odds multiply together, and the payout is set to give the house about a 1% edge on every row.
- What is the house edge on Tower?
- About 1%. The game pays roughly 0.99 times the fair multiplier on each row, so it returns around 99 cents of expected value per dollar wagered. The edge stays at ~1% no matter the difficulty or how high you climb.
- Is there a winning Tower strategy?
- No strategy makes Tower profitable in the long run. Difficulty settings and when you cash out change your variance โ how big and how often your wins are โ but the ~1% house edge and negative expected value stay exactly the same.
- Can I play the Tower game free?
- Yes. EV Lab's Tower is completely free, no signup and no real money. It also shows the house edge live as you play, so you can see the 1% math working instead of just reading about it.
Tower isn't a skill game โ it's a chain of coin flips with a 1% house edge stapled to every rung. Climbing higher doesn't beat the math; it just compounds it.
